Acid reflux and palpitations

Acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease is a condition when the stomach contents leak up into the esophagus. The typical symptoms are heartburn, regurgitation, pain in the upper abdomen or chest, acid taste in your mouth.
It has been seen that many people suffering from acid reflux complain also of having palpitations and angina similar pain which is due to the acid inflaming the esophagus and overstimulating the nerves in the area, which causes abnormal muscle contractions. Those muscle contractions can  cause chest pain. Patients that are not aware of having acid reflux may think that they are having some heart related problems and it makes them feel stressed and anxious. So the doctors believe that the anxiety and stress related to the acid reflux symtoms cause palpitations. Others believe that the gas trapped in the esophagus presses the vagus nerve ( which plays a role in regulating the heart rhythm ) and causes heart palpitations.
But remember if you feel chest pain and have other symptoms like shortness of breathe, dizziness, nausea along with palpitations you should contact your doctor.
If you have palpitations it is always recomended to see your doctor first to rule out some heart related problems.

Acid reflux in most cases can be treated with a proper diet and some life style changes like:

- stop smoking and reduce alcohol consumption
- if you are over weight, losing some weight may ease your acid reflux problems
- don’t eat at least three hours before bedtime
- don’t wear tight clothes
- eat smaller meals more frequently troughout the day
- exercise regulary

If your diet and life style changes don’t help, doctor will probably try to resolve your acid reflux with some medications like antiacids, H2 blockers, proton pump inibitors or foaming agents.

Some food that can trigger acid reflux

- garlic and onion
- tomatos,
- spicy food,
- mint,
- caffeinated drinks, sodas,
- high fat food.

    I noted the quote below.

Patients that are not aware of having acid reflux may think that they are
having some heart related problems and it makes them feel stressed and anxious.
So the doctors believe that the anxiety and stress related to the acid reflux symptoms
    cause palpitations.

Well I am not experiencing acid reflux symptoms but I have been diagnosed with
acid reflux. One of my main symptoms is palpitations and I know this is not
caused by me being stressed about it. If an attack occurs, it is the
palpitations that occur in the stomach and chest that are the nuisance and I am
no way stressed out about it. If the attack is especially bad, the palpitations
can go to the head as well. I can actually see the stomach palpitating when it
    happens.

I was on omeprazole and zantac twice a day but for some reason I had a glass of milk
when an attack was coming on and it disappeared almost immediately. I now drink
milk regularly and have taken myself down to 1 omeprazole a day at present with
    absolutely no effects.
